I think I'm getting bored with my reading. Don't get me wrong, I will forever and always love memoirs, and I love the books that I've been reading (like here and here). I just think I need to take a break from my beloved genre. I need something different.
Some of my all-time favorite books are fiction. Like, I love, love, love I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. I read it when I was attending Sac State. I remember wanting to eat, sleep, and breathe this book. I couldn't wait for the breaks between my classes so that I could head to the Student Union and read. It's probably not surprising to hear about my love for this book knowing that it's about a man and his schizophrenic twin brother. I think I was taking abnormal psychology at the time, and I was so impressed with the author's understanding of schizophrenia. Lamb had to have researched schizophrenia to the n-th degree because his depiction of the disorder seems so right on.
In fact, I have tons of fiction on my Amazon wish list. I use this list to keep track of the books I want to read. Some books I hope to read in the near future include:
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
(my first crack at a graphic novel)
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
(yes, I'm really late getting around to reading this one)
and...
Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
(a guilty pleasure)
I'm really excited about my next read, though. I've been on the wait list for it at the library, and it's finally ready to be picked up:
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
(before I see the movie)
So those are my next reads, I think. What's on your list?
The Help is great. You'll finish it in a couple of days. And I know what you mean about I Know This Much Is True; I couldn't stop reading it. And the best part was that it's SUCH a long book, it just lasted and lasted. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's nice for a good book to last forever :) And I'm excited to start The Help!

ReplyDeleteOn my list is - The Paris Wife by Paula Mclain, The Help, and A Moveable Feast by Hemingway. I also was told about a book that is written from the perspective of the family dog - The art of racing in the rain, sounds like a good read.
The Art of Racing in the Rain is really, really good, but be warned if you're an animal lover, it's rather bittersweet. It's set in Seattle, in my neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteJeanne and Sheri - I've picked up The Art of Racing in the Rain and read the dust jacket a good many times. I think I might as well put it on my to-read list too. I know when I read Marley and Me a bawled my eyes out like no other. From what you're saying, Sheri, I bet I will have to prepare myself for another good cry. And how cool that it's set in your neighborhood!
