Insurance is Da Bomb

It's that time of the year for one of those cheesy "I'm thankful" posts. I'm thankful for A LOT the whole year through, but over the past couple of weeks I've been like, whoa, I'm so thankful. Here's just one thing on my list:

I'm SO thankful for my medical insurance.

Fertility testing and fertility treatments can be really expensive. Like that HSG test? It costs, roughly, $1,000 without insurance. With insurance, some people pay 80%, some people pay 50%, and some people pay 25% or less with varying percentages in between. I paid nothing*. I didn't pay anything for any of my fertility tests.

For my treatments I will pay $25 per appointment plus the cost of prescriptions. Granted, I might have a shitload of appointments, but I'll take it over the costs I could be paying. This, of course, excludes IVF which will run us $12-15k should we choose to go that route.

I'm not trying to brag about my fantastic health insurance, either, because guess what? Infertility ain't nothin' to brag about. I know I'm super lucky to have been afforded the opportunity to buy into a good medical plan. So when we were sitting there, waiting to find out the verdict, I said to Nick, "right now I'm thankful to have good medical insurance."

*Sometimes I feel the need to respond to stupid comments before I ever publish a post. Defensive writing generally makes for a horrible read, but to avoid some ignoramous commenting that I did pay something because I pay for my health insurance, yes, I pay for my health insurance. So when I say I paid nothing, I mean I paid no additional costs above and beyond my biweekly premiums. Take that, asshole.

  1. Good job asshole!!! =D I get a weekly bitch feast about how shitty our health insurance and mainly our dental insurance is. Guess what. You don't pay shit for it!! You pay the co-pays once in a blue moon. I pay for the rest. (Of course when I say I, I mean Barry!!) But you can't bitch about the cost when you don't pay the cost. Yay you for excellent health insurance. And you're not the only one who thinks that...2 years ago when Riley was in the hospital, I was SOOOOOO grateful for our coverage. He spent a week in the hospital with numerous tests on an hourly basis. And I paid $750 for it. That. is. it. a $50,000+ bill.

  2. Another thing that health insurance gives us, peace of mind. I know the few months here and there throughout our lifetime (we're talkin quite few years here) when we weren't covered, it was a real scary feeling.

  3. Kelley - Oh gosh, I'm so glad you guys have good insurance. Can you imagine all of Riley's tests and stuff without insurance? I mean, really, it'd be insane. Just brush off those stupid comments!!!

Mom - Yeah, I hear you! I know the insurance companies are making money off of people when they don't go to the doctor, but I'm willing to pay for that peace of mind. It's sad that people have to pay out the ying yang, too, for that peace of mind, but I guess that's a whole other story.
